2021 Season Recap (In summary)

The 2021 season was the Buckeyes’ first season after the COVID-19 pandemic after the CWPA cancelled the 2020 season due to various restrictions amongst universities across the United States.

The Buckeyes began their season early on September 18th and 19th, travelling up to East Lansing, MI for the “Sparty Invite”. Each team at this tournament brought two teams; for us, we brought our Scarlet & Grey teams. All games at this tournament were exhibition games. University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Ohio State University were the 3 universities at this weekend of games.

The regular season began as the Buckeyes travelled to Ann Arbor, MI, and competed at Saline High School and University of Michigan. The Buckeyes played 4 total games, all against the Big Ten East Region. The Buckeyes defeated Purdue University 15-5, lost a nail biter to University of Michigan 6-9, and Michigan State University 8-11. The Buckeyes then played an exhibition game against Purdue University, heading back to Columbus with a record of 2-2 on the weekend.

The regular season continued 2 weeks later as the Buckeyes head up to Michigan for the third time, in Hudsonville Michigan. The Buckeyes played 4 games, all against the Big Ten West Region. The first game was a win against Illinois 9-6, the second game was a win against Indiana 12-2, third game was a win against University of Iowa 19-1, and the Buckeyes ran out of gas and dropped a game to University of Wisconsin 11-8. In total, the Bucks went 3-1 on the weekend, seeding them 4th in the Big Ten tournament with a record of 5-3 on the regular season.

The regular season concluded in Iowa City, Iowa, as the Buckeyes competed in the Big Ten tournament. The tournament was kicked off on Saturday , October 30th defeating 5th ranked Purdue University 10-8. The Buckeyes were then faced with 1st ranked Michigan State, and ran into a powerhouse losing 11-3. The Buckeyes faced University of Wisconsin Sunday, October 31st, and dropped a close game, placing Ohio State in 4th place in the Big Ten.

An unusual season due to COVID-19 came into proportion as the Buckeyes placed a club low 4th place in the Big Ten. Michigan State University represented the Big Ten well, and won the 2021 National Championship. The Buckeyes lost seniors Alex Rabe, Liam Holzer, and Sam Dexter. The Buckeyes will return almost their entire 42 person lineup, making next year a very promising season.

The Buckeyes had two players earn seasonal awards. Owen Roesch earned first team all big ten honors, and goalie of the year. Rob Lupo earned first team all Big Ten honors.

In the spring, the Buckeyes travelled to University of Tennessee Knoxville, and University of North Carolina. The year was a learning experience for many of our players, and we look forward to the next season.
